Our Curriculum
Introduction
In the daily living out of our Christian faith, we aim to ensure that religious education and spiritual development will permeate every aspect of the curriculum, so that it is explicit and implicit within the taught curriculum. The children are supported, through the curriculum, to grow in faith and deepen their relationships with God and each other.
Intent
At Chester-le-Street CE Primary School, our curriculum is rooted firmly in our Christian vision, “Let all that you do be done in love” (1 Corinthians 16:14). Everything we do flows from our core values of love, respect and care, creating a school culture in which every child feels safe, valued and able to belong. We recognise the diverse needs and starting points of our pupils, including those with SEND, low prior attainment and other barriers to learning. Because of this, our curriculum is intentionally designed to build strong foundations in wellbeing, security and relationships so that all pupils can flourish academically, socially and spiritually. We celebrate our local community and heritage while nurturing the confidence, curiosity and resilience pupils need to engage with the wider world.
Our broad, ambitious and coherently sequenced curriculum is built around three whole-school themes—Our Community, Our World and Our Impact—which provide meaningful contexts for learning across subjects. This thematic approach helps children make purposeful connections, understand their place in local, national and global communities and develop a sense of responsibility for the world around them. High-quality teaching, evidence-informed practice and a clear progression of knowledge and skills enable pupils to “know more and remember more” over time. We prioritise communication, oracy and vocabulary development, and our commitment to inclusive practice ensures that all learners—including those with SEND, disadvantaged pupils and those in our Enhanced Learning Provision—can access, engage with and succeed within our curriculum. Behaviour for learning is rooted in respect and positive relationships, and enrichment opportunities further widen pupils’ experiences and aspirations.
Our intent is for pupils to leave Chester-le-Street CE Primary School as compassionate, confident and capable individuals who live out our Christian vision through their words and actions. We want our children to be articulate communicators, critical thinkers and responsible citizens who understand the positive impact they can have on their community and the wider world. Through rigorous inclusion, targeted support, strong pastoral systems and a rich programme of personal development, we ensure that every child is prepared for the next stage of their education and equipped with the knowledge, character and values needed to lead happy, successful and purposeful lives in modern Britain and beyond.
Bespoke Curriculum
We have designed our own bespoke curriculum as the vehicle for this, with a view to changing our pupils' hearts, as well as their minds. This curriculum is underpinned by three highly relevant world issues,
Our Community
Our World
Our Impact
Curriculum Organisation
There is evidence that teaching subject knowledge and skills as part of a wider topic-based curriculum allows pupils to make useful links between areas of learning, and consolidate skills. Children are also likely to be more engaged in their learning if it has a context and theme that runs through it. Chester-le-Street CE Primary School has therefore developed a thematic curriculum to deliver the majority of the National Curriculum 2014. Others are taught discretely. The timetable is carefully considered to ensure that pupils experience a broad range of learning opportunities and that the curriculum is not narrowed.
The following subjects are taught discretely:
- Maths
- Physical Education
- Religious Education
- Modern Foreign Languages
- Computing
- Music
- PSHE
The following subjects are taught thematically:
- English
- Science
- History or Geography
- Art
- Design Technology
Each termly plan has a core curriculum driver taken from either History or Geography programme of study. Curriculum delivery is planned around a thought-provoking ‘hook in or catalyst’ question which encourages a sense of curiosity in our pupils. Independence and resilience are encouraged through the involvement of pupils in uncovering new information for themselves to reach an answer.
Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)
At Chester-le-Street CE Primary School we believe that inclusive education means providing all pupils with appropriate education and support alongside their peers. The Curriculum is all the planned activities that the school organises in order to promote learning, personal growth and development. Further information can be found in the SEN Information Report
If you would like to discuss your SEND requirements in detail please contact the school to arrange an appointment.
