Our ELP Provision

Our Enhanced Learning Provision (ELP) has two classes, Discovers and Pioneers class. Children join discovers in their Reception year group and generally move up to Pioneers class in KS2 although this is dependent on when they are ready to move as we operate a stage not age policy. The classes work closely together so that the specific needs of individual pupils can be further met.  The ELP classes are supported by our team of experienced teachers and teaching assistants as well as our SENDCO.

The ELP learning environment is set up across two classrooms and an outside learning area.  Between the two classrooms is a breakout space which houses our rabbits and various sensory calming spaces.  The children also have access to all other areas in the mainstream school including the library, dinner hall and extensive outdoor grounds.  Every opportunity is taken to include our Enhanced Learning Provision pupils in mainstream activities whenever possible. Where appropriate, pupils are supported to join the mainstream classes to access other aspects of the school day e.g. PE sessions, science lessons, music lessons, theme days, assemblies, phonics sessions etc. Pupils are encouraged to take part in mainstream school clubs and sports teams.

ELP 1 and ELP 2 follow a bespoke curricula which is designed to prioritise the children’s needs and support them to make the most progress in those areas which will have the greatest impact on their life chances. The curriculum is personalised to the special educational needs of our pupils and provides opportunities for children to achieve their potential across a broad range of areas.

The ELP staff plan and offer a wealth of provision for the pupils (supported by the EP, Speech and Language team, Occupational Therapist and other external services). The school has a Family Liaison officer as well as a Thrive practitioner and ELSA, who can support specific wider needs for the families and children. Regular educational trips are planned to enhance children’s experiences and encourage them to apply their learning in new and familiar contexts, whist embedding memorable experiences.

How can my child access the Enhanced Learning Provision?

Enhanced Learning Provision is a term that is used to describe specialist provision in a mainstream school for pupils with a significant level of special needs. Admission is through Durham Council’s SEN team. At Chester Le Street CE Primary school, the ELP provision is for pupils with moderate learning difficulties including children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) To be considered for a place within the ELP, your child will need an Education Health Care Plan. The school will need to be consulted by Durham Council and a decision over whether we can meet the needs of your child will be provided to the council.  If you feel your child may need to be considered for an ELP placement, please discuss your views with the staff at your child’s current setting or your child’s SEND caseworker.

Throughout the year, the SENCO runs regular sessions to enable parents to visit the ELP, enabling them to ask questions and find out more about our provision.  Please call the office to arrange a visit.
