Science at Chester-le-Street CE Primary School
At Chester-le-Street CE Primary School, our aim is to provide a science curriculum that enables the children to explore the world around them. A high-quality science education provides the foundations for understanding the world through biology, chemistry and physics. We believe that this is particularly pertinent in an ever changing world and that all pupils should be provided with engaging and memorable learning experiences.
Teachers from Nursery to Year 6 have worked together to create a shared vision of science teaching and learning at our school. At our school we agreed that science teaching and learning is excellent when…
- Children are participating in engaging practical science enquiries and exploring the world around them.
- Children use their inquisitiveness to find answers to questions.
- Children have access to high quality scientific equipment.
- Children are highly motivated and enjoy lessons.
- Children are challenged and are able to find, record and explain their own learning using a wide range of scientific vocabulary.
- Children are able to relate their learning to science in the real world.
- Children make good progress in science and can apply their knowledge in subsequent lessons and across the curriculum.
- Staff subject knowledge is secure and this is used effectively to plan and teach science lessons.
- Staff actively engage in science CPD.
- Staff are able to confidently use assessment to provide appropriate scaffolding and challenge.
As a part of our science curriculum, children enjoy our annual Science Week.
We apply ‘Talk 4 Writing’ strategies in our science lessons to help to understand complex science processes such as the digestive system.
Primary Science Quality Mark
The Primary School Quality Mark programme ensures effective leadership of science, enables schools to work together to share good practice and is supported by professional development led by local experts. It encourages teacher autonomy and innovation while at the same time offering a clear framework for development in science subject leadership, teaching and learning. Schools that achieve PSQM demonstrate commitment and expertise in science leadership, teaching and learning.
We are proud to announce that it is one of 136 schools that has achieved
the Primary Science Quality Mark (PSQM) this month, a nationally recognised
accreditation that celebrates a commitment to developing excellence in science
leadership, curriculum design, teaching and learning.
The feedback we received is:
It is fantastic to see that so much progress has been made this year in so many
areas of science leadership, curriculum design and teaching and learning at
Chester-Le-Street CE Primary School. The collaborative approach of the
school community has ensured that developmental priorities have been
achieved in science which can be extended to other subject areas. The school
has fully engaged in a science development cycle using clear science vision
and principles to really promote science as a subject and greatly improve the
enthusiasm of the pupils and the confidence of the teachers. There is much to
celebrate and enjoy in this submission with all pupils engaged and making
progress with the newly embedded curriculum and discovering what it means
to work as scientists. The school community is now well placed to build further
upon this progress as it continues to develop science in the future. Well done to
you all and good luck with all the plans that you have for science for the year
ahead.
